Q&A - The Sun Property Plus
30th September 2005

Q.    I HAVE renovated my house recently and my main door now is directly facing my main gate with a driveway of about 30ft long. I plan to place an altar right in front, so that when people enter my house, they will come face to face with the altar. On the right side is an opening to my living room. My house is facing Southeast (SE). My husband’s Gua is No 6 and mine is No 9. We were born in 1949 and 1958, respectively. I have read that it is not good to have the main door facing the gate.

Is it all right to leave it as it is or do I have to change the direction of my main door? I am worried of any negative qi. We have not moved in yet, so additional renovation is not a problem.

A. It is not necessarily a problem if your main door faces the main gate. When we talk about feng shui, we also talk about the flow of qi and how we can tap this flow to benefi t us. If the direction from which the qi is flowing in is beneficial, then this is good. In other words, if your main door faces a particular direction that is good, then it is definitely not a problem to face this direction. Having the altar facing this direction can likewise be beneficial.

You are looking at the house from one perspective. From another, as your husband is a Qian Gua person, he would find the SE door unsuitable. For a Qian Gua person, the auspicious directions are West (W), Northeast (NE), Southwest (SW) and Northwest (NW).

As such, your front door should face any of these directions. A possibility is to have a SW door. You may contact our office for more information if you require a personal consultation.

Q. I am an Indonesian born on April 5, 1966, at about 5.45pm. My wife was born on July 17, 1972, around 4.30am. We have a son who was born on Nov 3, 2001, around 7.30am. We have finally managed to purchase a small house in South Jakarta. The entrance is facing S and we would like to know if this is good for us. What other elements do we need to place to enhance our wealth, health and happiness to create harmony in our new house? Do things like a Happy Buddha or kei loon work?
A. Based on your date of birth, you are associated with Dui Gua (No 7), and both your wife and son are Gen Gua (No 8). For your family, the auspicious directions are NW, SW, NE and W. Your house is facing S. This direction is not so suitable. You might want to consider doing some renovation so that you have a door that faces W. Spending your money on renovation is more worthwhile than buying any Happy Buddha or qi lin (kei loon) as feng shui is about direction and location. We cannot change direction and location by placing various items.

By changing your front door to face W and have your bed head facing the same direction, you and your family will have a very good chance of achieving health and happiness.
