Q&A - The Sun Property Plus
2nd September 2005

Q.    I have been living in a condominium unit on the 16th floor (East [E]-West [W] house) with the balcony facing W for eight months. My unit has the view of the swimming pool and the main road, and the gate/guard entrance to the whole area with four blocks of condos. The main door of my unit is facing Southeast (SE). My bedroom is in the Northwest (NW) sector but the door is facing South (S) while my bathroom and kitchen are facing E. My son’s study is in W, with the door facing E. I have placed my altar table facing the main door or E. All my family members have Gua No 7 and 8. The main entrance to my condo block is facing S and the lift is facing E. I understand that for Gua 7 and 8, E, S, N and SE are not good. I have placed a small pair of qilin and a dragontortoise at my front door with a gold-red doormat. I have painted the east wall and my main door yellow. Is the condo unit suitable for me and my family?
A. From the description of your condo unit, we make some basic assumptions: Your door is directly facing SE. The kitchen then covers the area between the main door and the side of your condo.

Let us look at what is good and what is not so for you.

Firstly, the main door is located in the E sector facing SE, which is not good for people with Gua 7 and 8. There is a possibility that the household will have a lot of arguments and some illness. Neither the gold-red doormat and the yellow door nor the qilin and dragontortoise can help much. You must understand that the main principle behind feng shui is direction and location. If either of these is wrong, anything you place or display will not be able to offset the discrepancy.

The master bedroom in NW is not too bad. This can offset some (but not all) of the negative qi from having the main door facing the wrong direction. Where your bed is located and the direction of your bedhead will also have an impact. As this information was not provided, I cannot comment on it.

The kitchen in E is not too bad, as it is suppressing the E influence, which will be good. But we need to look at the stove location, which was not mentioned. The best solution is to have your stove direction towards Southwest.

The study in W is not too bad either but it is advisable to have the desk pointing to Northeast.

The altar position is not ideal but without being on site, I cannot suggest an alternative.

I cannot comment on the suitability of your condo based solely on the descriptions that you have given. In feng shui, a single degree variance in a compass reading can make a whole lot of difference between good and bad. I can only provide proper advice by going on site.

Q. I would like to know something about my new house in Taman Sri Taming in Cheras before I move in. My Gua is No 1 (born in April 1963) and my wife’s Gua is No 3. I just got the keys from the developer. I hope to seek some advice before we move in. My house Gua is No 7 which “sits west” facing E. My gate opens and faces E. My main door also opens E but faces SE. There is a lamppost just opposite my house which faces directly at the centre of my house. It looks like a snake with its head looking into my house. I am very worried about this. The kitchen, which is at the back of my house, is in the W sector. Should I renovate the back portion to extend the kitchen area? My house is a 20ft x 73ft. There is an extra 7ft at the back.
A. Firstly, I wish to point out that the notion of house Gua is basically incorrect. I am sure there are people who will argue about this point but they don’t have 50 years of accumulated data on this matter.

Let us look at the matter properly; feng shui consists of the heavenly or cosmic trinity of Heaven, Earth and Man. Feng shui is a potential, which can only be activated by the human qi. The house is passive and hence cannot have a Gua. Also, from another angle, this would mean that a person who is an E Gua should only use a N-S oriented house and a W Gua person should only use a NE-SW oriented house. This will limit the choice of houses a person can buy.

So, having ignored the house Gua, your E-facing house with a SE-facing door is actually good for you based on the Ba Zhai (8 Mansions) school of feng shui. The lamppost opposite you will affect you only if you have a door facing it. As your door is facing SE, the lamppost should not affect you. If you are still worried, you can hang up a Ba Gua mirror with a convex surface on the front of your house pointing back towards the lamppost.

I do not see a reason for you to extend your kitchen in W as you have not moved in yet. If you have moved in, then this will not be a good year for you to renovate as you would be digging at the position of the Tai Sui and this is not advisable.
