Q&A - The Sun Property Plus
5th August 2005

Q.    WE are interested in a 2 1/2-storey new house which is facing North (N), but slightly slanted to the West (W). When facing out from the inside, the main door of the house is on the left. I was born in the year of dragon in 1976 and my Gua number is nine (Fire), while my husband was born in the year of dog in 1970 and his Gua number is three (Wood). Will it be better for us if the main door is on the right when facing out from the inside? And which is the best location to place the prayer table?
A. Based only on your Gua number and that of your husband’s, the house should be OK. The main door on the left corner of the house is assumed to be in the Northwest (NW), which is not so good. I assume that there is a sliding door in the centre of the house which could be a better door for the both of you. If you have an option, the main door on the right should be better. The altar should normally face the front door (out the front door). What we have looked into here is only at the main door. We have yet to look into the interior layout and external supporting structures. Then only can we say whether the house is suitable for your occupation or not.

Q. My wife and I have the same Gua number of seven. Our best direction is W but we have a hard time trying to position our bed so that it faces the W because our bathroom is located in the W. Any suggestions on how we can solve this problem? I think Southwest (SW) is best for both of us, but I’m worried as we will then be sleeping with our feet facing the door like how a coffin is usually placed. People say this is not a good idea but do we have other options? Enclosed herewith is the floor plan of our house. Most of the W side is our bathroom area and it is very difficult for me to relocate the bathroom. So, please advise me on the available options.
A. The Ming or Life Gua of every person has eight directions. Four directions are good and four are bad. This is based only on the application of the Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) system. For simplicity’s sake, we generally say that Life Guas are split into two groups - East (E) and W life persons. This does not mean that a W life person has to use the W direction all the time. The other three good directions - SW, NW and Northeast (NE) - can also be used. In fact, based on a person’s Gua, it could be that W is the best direction. Based on the floor plan, your bed direction is SW. This is pretty good for both you and your wife; harmony in family, long life and good health.

The coffin reference applies only to the main front door. In this case, this is a mixup between Chinese culture and feng shui. You are not having your feet towards the main front door. It is only the toilet door and therefore it is not a problem. If you are still uncomfortable with the idea, you can have a screen between your bed and the toilet door. This way the door is not visible from your bed and your feet is pointing towards the screen and not the door.

Your main problem is that you are using an N door, and as such, it is not a good direction for you. You are Dui Gua (No 7 Gua), and as such, your door should face NW, SW, NE and W in that order. Based only on the floor plan (from which we can only be, at the most, 30% accurate), you should enter from the garage door more often and use the bonus room with your bed head facing NW.
