Q&A - The Sun Property Plus 6th May 2005
Q. |
I AM renting a room that is located at the end of a long corridor. The room is sited in the northeast section of the house. I was born in the year of the snake. Is there anything in particular I can do to enhance the romance luck of my room?
A. |
Merely providing your year of birth is insufficient. There is no problem with the room being at the end of a corridor. Its location in relation to the rest of the house is more important. Please refer to the chart for your Gua number [see Property plus, March 18] and your best direction for the year. If you place your bed with your head towards the recommended direction, it should assist in your relationships.

My mother is a firm believer in feng shui and frequently gives me feng shui items such as the three coins and a crystal globe for my desk. She even advises me to purchase certain talismans. Will this really help my luck or is it just wishful thinking?
A. |
In classic feng shui, the location and direction are more important. Very seldom do we recommend coins and globes, except in specific locations of the room.

Q. |
Does the colour or furnishing of a room affect feng shui? I love red and am thinking of using it in my bedroom but have been told it is an aggressive colour that’s not suited for a single woman. What colours would be appropriate?
A. |
Colours have a very minimal effect. I would say that if the rest of your feng shui is correct, having the right colour is not too important. On the other hand, if your feng shui is generally wrong, then every little bit helps where ease of mind is concerned. In other words, if you get your room location and bed direction right, don’t worry about the colour.

Q. |

I read in your column dated April 8 that mirrors hanging on the wall facing the main door will affect the flow of wealth out of the house. Thus, is it bad to have a wall display cabinet, measuring 1ft by 51/2 ft with a door in clear glass, facing the main door? Mine is an apartment with the main door facing north. Also, is it good to hang a ‘feng shui window’ facing the main door?
A. |
If the clear glass on the front of your cabinet is not too reflective, it should not be a problem. The problem with a mirror is that it is reflective. The other criterion to consider is the distance between the cabinet and your front door. If it is right across your apartment, then any negative effects [if any] would be lessened. What do you mean by a ‘feng shui window’? Do you mean a Ba Gua mirror? Generally, if you do not have a mirror facing your main door, you should be fine. If your cabinet door is too reflective, you can place frosted film over it.

My husband and I have been living in our present house for 12 years. Our house faces north [N], which is his worst direction [total loss]. His Gua number is two, while mine is nine. The past 12 years have not been smooth sailing but not tragic either.
We have been following guidelines from books and feng shui magazines with placement or rearrangement of things for the past few years, but have not seen any result. Would a house facing south be a better choice with it being his second-worst direction [six killings]? A west [W]-facing house is generally hotter though that is my husband’s best direction.
You mentioned earlier that property facing northwest [NW] or southeast is not a good choice. Is this so for 2005 only? Please advise whether we should sell this house and move or if there are remedies for this situation.

It would seem that your present house has not been so good for the last 12 years. Now, when you say your house faces N, you need to define whether your house façade is N or your door actually faces N. What is more important is the direction of the door.
You will also have to be careful because when you face N, it is 45º and each different degree will have a different effect. You need not buy a W-facing house. What you could do is to have a W-facing entrance.
A NW house is not so good this year and depending on the person, it might not be suitable altogether. Rather than purchase a new house, it may be better to get a proper feng shui consultation on your existing house to see the options.
Sometimes, it may be just a matter of some simple renovation to improve the feng shui. You might want to consider a consultation prior to the purchase of a new house as well. This is so that we can avoid getting a house with bad feng shui that needs to be renovated. The whole idea of getting a new house would be to get one where the feng shui is correct with minimal renovation. It would not be a good idea to get a S-facing house unless you have a corner lot with a W entrance as well.
