Enhance your Luck with the Right Directions - The Sun Property Plus
10th March 2006
PEOPLE are most familiar with popular feng shui, or “new age” feng shui, which encompasses countless simple methods of creating positive changes in a person’s environment. In the workplace, for example, a feng shui practitioner would encourage you to place your computer in the north or west area of your cubicle to enhance creativity, or in the southeast to generate income. For career or business luck, you should place an aquarium or tabletop fountain in the east, north or southeast. In the practise of classical or traditional feng shui, however, information on how to enhance one’s wealth or luck is not handed out over the counter like a generic drug to fight the common cold. There is no one-size-fits-all approach that can be used by everyone for the same purpose, says Grandmaster Datuk Dr Yap Cheng Hai (pix). The most important thing in feng shui is to find your personal direction. This is achieved using the Ba Zhai system, or the 8 Mansions system, which is the most effective method for individuals to choose their four most auspicious directions (each one is 10% less auspicious than the other, but auspicious nonetheless). As long as an individual faces his or her most auspicious direction, 90% of the battle is won. According to Grandmaster Yap, the Ba Zhai system is used to establish a person’s Flying Star, which is a single number that is derived by applying a simple formula. All you need to know is a person’s birth year and gender. Follow the steps, examples and Ba Zhai charts below, and you can obtain your own Flying Star to improve your luck by up to 90%.
- On a piece of paper, write down the last two numbers of your birth year.
- Add the numbers together.
- If you get a single-digit number on your first try, go to the next step. If you obtain another double-digit number, add those two numbers, and repeat until your result is a single-digit number.
- If you are male, minus your final single-digit number from 10. If you are female, add 5 to your final single-digit number, and if you obtain another double-digit number, add them together until you get a single-digit.
- That final single-digit number is your Flying Star. (Important: Please note that if your final number is 5, that is not your Flying Star. For males, your Flying Star is 2, and for females, it is 8.)
To further enhance luck, feng shui enthusiasts may want to purchase items such as crystals, water features or plants to be placed in auspicious areas. Utilised correctly, they are effective for enhancing your luck by 5% to 10%. Used wrongly, they will affect your luck adversely. Therefore, it is most important to know exactly where to place certain objects, and this depends on an individual’s Flying Star Chart, says Grandmaster Yap.
The Flying Star Chart is different from the Ba Zhai Chart. While the Ba Zhai Chart is used to find a person’s auspicious directions, the Flying Star Chart is used to locate a person’s auspicious areas in a particular location. Locating these areas are an intricate process, and knowing how to influence control in these areas to enhance one’s luck is something that only a feng shui master should attempt. Again, it must be emphasised that auspicious areas and directions vary from individual to individual.
Feng Shui at Work
If you have already determined your Flying Star and would like to practice a little luck enhancement at your workplace, here are some things you can do if your workstation is a cubicle:
- Change your sitting position to match your most auspicious personal direction.
- If you have space on either side of you, place an extra table where you can work at.
- If you can move your desk, even better.
- Change the position of your computer.
- This is a good alternative if you are unable to move your desk or use an extra table.
- Understandably, you may not be able to face your most auspicious direction, but remember that there are three other directions you can use.
- If you cannot accomplish any of the above, try switching workstations with a colleague.
- Use plants, water features, crystals, etc, only when you have ascertained your auspicious areas with a feng shui master.

Calculation to Find your Flying Star
Birth year: 1979
- 7 + 9 = 16
- 1 + 6 = 7
- Males: (10 -) 7 = 3
Females: (5 +) 7 = 12
1 + 2 = 3
For the both males and females born in 1979, their Flying Star is 3. Accord-ing to the Ba Zhai chart, their most auspicious direction is south (+90), followed by north (+80), southeast (+70) and east (+60).
Birth year: 1946
- 4 + 6 = 10
- 1 + 0 = 1
- Males: (10 -) 1 = 9
Females: (5 +) 1 = 6
For the male born in 1946, his Flying Star is 9. His most auspicious direction is east (+90), followed by southeast (+80), north (+70) and south (+60).
For the female born in 1946, her Flying Star is 6. Her most auspicious direction is west (+90), followed by northeast (+80), southwest (+70) and northwest (+60).
Birth year: 1932
- 3 + 2 = 5
- Males: (10 -) 5 = 5
Females: (5 +) 5 = 10
1 + 0 = 1
Males who end up with 5 must change to 2, so for the male born in 1932, his Flying Star is 2. His most auspicious direction is northeast (+90), followed by west (+80), northwest (+70) and southwest (+60).
For the female born in 1932, her Flying Star is 1. Her most auspicious direction is southeast (+90), followed by east (+80), south (+70) and north (+60).

Life Gua, Not Flying Star
With reference to last week’s Feng Shui guide by Grandmaster Datuk Dr Yap Cheng Hai, he clarified that the life gua (and not Flying Star) is used to ascertain one’s auspicious directions, and this is done by using the Ba Zhai Chart.
How does one calculate his life gua?
- Write down the last two numbers of your birth year.
- That final single-digit number is your life gua.
(IMPORTANT: Please note that if your final number is 5, that is NOT your life gua. For males, your life gua is then 2, and for females, it is 8.)
