Feng Shui for Children
The Edge Haven - Kuala Lumpur
February - March 2006

THERE IS ACTUALLY no special feng shui for children but more on how feng shui can be applied with a different emphasis that can benefit children more than adults. As parents, we will always want the best for our kids, but bear in mind that any kind of feng shui for children would still be dependent on their parents as the life and fate of a child is tied to its parents. Only when the child is no longer dependent on the parents can feng shui be applied on its own.

Generally, parents should understand that children would have different concerns depending on their age group. As such, any emphasis placed on feng shui will likewise have to reflect these concerns. In younger children, for example those below the age of 10, Master Yap Boh Chu feels the emphasis usually lies on harmony and health. For children above 10, feng shui will generally lean towards enhancement of the child’s studies. “ Having said this, applying the correct feng shui is generally good for everything although there will be a slight emphasis on the various aspects. This means that even though we are looking at enhancing harmony and health, it doesn’t mean that the application of feng shui is not conducive for studies,” explains Yap.

Yap stresses that feng shui for children must start with their parents. The main points to take note of from a feng shui perspective is to have the main door, kitchen and bedroom in the right positions for the parents. Once this is done, then only can one look at feng shui for their child.

Here’s a recap on the good directions:

  • Main door is to face a good direction based on the parents Ming Gua (Life Gua).
  • The kitchen is to be located in the parents’ inauspicious locations with the stove pointing towards the auspicious directions of the parents.
  • The bed of the parents is to face the auspicious directions of the individuals.

Health
To derive the best of health, it is best that children sleep with their head pointing towards their Tien Yi position (refer to table).

Ming Gua Sheng Qi Tian Yi Yan Nian Fu Wei
1 SE E S N
2 NE W NW SW
3 S N SE E
4 N S E SE
6 W NE SW NW
7 NW SW NE W
8 SW NW W NE
9 E SE N S

If this is not enough, then the child should sleep in the room corresponding to his health direction in the house. For example, if a child is Kan Gua (Gua number 1) then to maximise his health, he should sleep in the E room of the house with his head pointing to the East when he sleeps.

Harmony
If your children are rebellious, and you want them to listen to you, activate the Yan Nian direction. Again, location and direction must be considered. The ideal would be to locate the child in a room at the Yin Nian location. If this is not possible, an alternative would be to use a room in the child’s own Yin Nian location. In both cases, the child should sleep with his head pointing to his own Yan Nian direction. For example, it the father is Kan Gua (Gua number 1) and the child is Zhen Gua (Gua number 3), the child should sleep in the room located in the South (the father’s Yan Nian location) with his head pointing to SE (his own Yan Nian direction).

Studies
To assist in studies, the main point to consider is the location of the study table and the direction of the study table. In this case, we will want to activate either the Fu Wei or Sheng Qi direction. For example, if the student is a Kun Gua (gua number 2), then his Fu Wei direction is SW and his Sheng Qi direction is NE. Have the desk at the SW room in the SW location of the room and facing either NE or SW. An additional consideration is to look at the fl ying stars of the house. The 1 White star is generally considered the scholarly star. As such, if you are able to face the 1 white star and that direction coincides with the your auspicious direction, this will also contribute to the scholarly success of the person. The 1 White star is at the East in 2006. If your Ming Gua is 1, 3, 4 or 9, you should try to face the East next year.

The following table gives your Life Gua number based on your year of birth and corresponding auspicious directions for life
